There are Government departments, particulary in America, involved in digitizing old manuscripts, documents and photographs. The amount of material is almost unfathomable, often copyright free, and importantly in high resolution and very well scanned. The cataloguing systems can be a bit of a drag though and searching through them all can be tiring. I used to use apps like Web Devil or Page Sucker to download all the images, but this can literally take days and several gigs of your hard drive. A simple solution is to bookmark this link and replace the site address I've placed there with whichever site you want. If the site has thousands of images, you can further define your search via an additional search term, just add it after the first string with a space between.

this is very interesting. Sorry for answering that late but I just found out about your post.
Unfortunately it did not work for me but seems to be exactly what I need.
So, does it work with any site? Can I put a www.example.com address too?

Please, if you can, share your wisdom with us :)
thanx!
