Welsh border town Hay-on-Wye, the secondhand book capital of the world, has beaten 52 other British towns to win the honour of twinning with the legendary Malian city of Timbuktu. Gareth Radcliffe, mayor of Hay, notes that both places lie on the exact same line of longitude. Meanwhile, the director of the Hay Festival is reported to be already considering a ‘Hay-in-the-desert’ offshoot. |
